1. In the reaction of cobalt(II) chloride and hydrogen fluoride, cobalt(II) fluoride and hydrochloric acid are formed. If 6.2 moles of cobalt(II) fluoride are to be formed, what is the mass of CoCl2 needed (grams)? CoCl2 + 2HF → CoF2 + HCl mole of CoCl2 = mole of CoF2 = 6.2 mass of CoCl2 = 6.2*(35*2 + 59) = 799.8g 2. Calculate the molarity of caffeine in a 12 oz cola drink containing 33.5 mg of caffeine, C8H10N4O2. (1oz = 29.6 mL) molar mass of caffeine: 12*8 + 1*10 + 14*4 + 16*2 = 194 mole of caffeine in 33.5 mg = 0.0335g = 0.0335/194 = 0.000173 mol molarity = 0.000173/(12*29.6/1000) = 0.486*10^-3 M 3.What is the molarity of a barium chloride solution prepared by dissolving 8.8 grams of BaCl2?2(H2O) in enough water to make 574.5 mL of solution? molar mass of BaCl2?2(H2O) = 137+35*2+2*18=243 mole of 8.8g BaCl2?2(H2O) = 8.8/243=0.0362 mol so mole of BaCl2 in the solution is also 0.0362 mol molarity = 0.0362/0.5745 = 0.063 M
